GRAPHIC TEES
For the genre-agnostic and the obsessive. Music graphic tees built on sharp, specific observation rather than nostalgic reverence or lazy name-dropping.
Obsessive, Not Nostalgic
Most music merchandise runs on nostalgic reverence — a band, an era, a genre treated as untouchably sacred, sold to people who want to signal their taste rather than actually argue about it. It's comfortable, and it's also mostly hollow.
Convict Shirts is more interested in the sharper version: the specific, slightly argumentative opinion that comes from someone who's actually obsessive about music, not just nostalgic for a particular decade. THE DESIGN SHOULD FEEL LIKE SOMETHING SAID AT 1AM BY SOMEONE WHO GENUINELY CARES, NOT SOMETHING PRINTED ON A NOSTALGIA-TOUR MERCH TABLE.
“Nostalgia is easy. Having an actual opinion about music, specific enough that someone might disagree with you, is harder and more interesting.”
— Convict Shirts
Why Genre-Agnostic
Building the category around a single genre's specific in-jokes narrows the audience to people already fluent in that genre's internal references. Convict Shirts is more interested in the broader, genuinely obsessive relationship many people have with music generally — crossing genres, eras and scenes rather than staying locked to one.
This means the designs draw on whatever produces the sharpest, most specific observation in a given month, rather than being constrained to a single lane.
Name-Dropping With A Purpose
When a specific artist, band or scene appears in a design, it's because the reference earns its place — it makes the joke or observation land in a way that a generic version wouldn't. Name-dropping purely to signal music-fan credibility, without an actual point being made, is treated as lazy design and avoided.
